I do dive steel 120s, wear >20 lbs weight and dive a 40# Mach V Extreme. (I got the Extreme because that's what was cheap on EBay.). Good to know that I'm protected from knife-wielding enemy divers. Mike would be proud.
Does the 40 # create much more drag? I'm just wondering in case I choose to overshoot my initial needs and go for the 40. I just wanted to see what trade-offs I'd be dealing with. Thanks all the input guys.

…I would be willing to pay extra for the extreme if it is worth it, but I wanted to get your opinions…

I use a 30 Lb Mark V Extreme because I sometimes find myself where rough treatment can’t be avoided. I have no concerns over somebody grabbing the wing to haul me aboard. It is a lot more abrasion resistant but the hose is just as vulnerable as any other wing. I suppose you have seen the YouTube clip:

IMHO, the video is realistic — definitely very tuff stuff. Is it worth an extra $100+ to you? That is a much tougher call. I guess the compromise is between price, added life expectancy of the bladder, and how concerned you are about accidental punctures. I have not seen another wing that is as tough. Do you see much wear on your current BC?

As far as form factor, the Mark V is very narrow so there is very little of the deflated wing flopping in the current. I have not used the Mark V Signature but the cover is much more flexible, which I see more as a potential disadvantage.

I just picked up the Mach V Extreme (got a good deal on a barely used one) and it is a very narrow wing. I was debating between this and the Halcyon 30#. The only thing the Mach V lacks is a carrying strap on the wing. Not a big deal.

According to Edd, the 40 is just about an inch or so wider all around and unless you place them side by side they look nearly the same. Drag shouldn't be much of an issue.

The material on the wing is used commercially by a lot of other companies like Hex Armor gloves, dive rite nomad wings and is called Super Fabric.

As far as lift is concerned, you won't need 40 in tropical diving and unless some of the guys here have both wings to compare against, you're better off getting professional advice.

I talked to Ed today. He is a very nice guy and gave me other options to look at including the nomad if I intend on doing sidemount/doubles/single. He said the Nomad was the most versatile, but the Mach V was the most streamlined single you can get. The Mach V extreme he said was a nice wreck setup to protect from sharp rusty metal. I'll take a little bit and decide which direction I want to go.

IMHO..... the Oxy Extreme wings are the most awesome wings $ can buy! I own/dive 3 of 'em and wouldn't dive any other wing....they're just all around brilliant!
