ok so im starting to learn a little physiology and know our lungs have adapted so that our hemoglobin is nearly 100% saturated with O2 when we breathe even though air is only 21% O2. this got me thinkin about this new craze of oxygen bars and whether or not there is actually any medical basis to it or if theyre just selling the placebo effect. ok so the air is probably cleaner than what we breathe on a day to day basis but thats about it. this one just kinda popped in to my head so i thought id see what eveyone else thought. ive never been to one of these - has anyone else? if so what was the experience like? i personally think theyre a bit of bs but im old school.

Nope, its just BS. You might want to look at super-oxygenated water as well if you feel like a laugh.

I've been to an number of them in different airports and the only thing they are good for are hangovers.

Packhorse:
They use 100% O2 for medical use and that is not for the placebo effect is it.
So I would have to say its not ALL BS.
They may use 100% O2 but (do we all remember our oxygen provider courses here?) the only way you actually breathe 100% is via an airtight demand system (i.e. via a regulator). O2 bar customers probably breathe around 50% O2 in reality.

That's probably lucky because (do we all remember our advanced nitrox here?) O2 over 0.5 ATA p.p. has an irritational effect on the lungs, although you'd need to be breathing 100% for around 4.5 hours per day every day to really risk problems.

Hmm, maybe I should have had a go on that deco bottle of mine this morning...:coffee:

Don't know about oxygen bars, but when I did the DAN O2 course, we got to practice on each other. It was late evening, and we were all quite exhausted, but when we got to be the patient, it felt great. :D

bars are supposed to be smoky, not have purified air enriched with oxygen. that's just wrong.

They use 100% O2 medically when blood oxygen saturation levels are low. Normal levels are 95-100%.
