Anyone know how strict the rangers are in the off season at the SCUBA beach? I dove in November once before I knew of the seasonal closer, but don't know if I just went unnoticed or not.

I don't know if the rangers get pissy about off-season diving there. <diatribe>Why even have a season? And charging divers $15 for a gate key to just drop off their gear? Seriously?</diatribe>

*whew*

On the other hand, Carter Lake is open all year to divers and you can drive right down to the water. Let me know if you want to try that.

Don't forget the $10 day pass. That being said it's not too bad loading all your gear up on a hand truck to avoid the $15.

How's the vis @ Carter Lake? I didn't think it was all that good. Drive is more then twice as far for me as well.

Split the physical difference and go to Chatfield. It is open all year long, too, and the cost is minimal. I'll join you there if you wish.

Or just plan to go to New Mexico and do your winter diving there. I will be doing a trip there in early December if you want to join.

Last time I was in Chatfield the vis was about 6". That being said, I will probably be giving it a go at some point through the winter. As for Rock Lake I would love to join but that weekend is off limits for leaving the better half behind.

Chatfield gets nippy in mid winter. I was there a couple weeks ago, and it was 53° F. It will get nippier as winter approaches. I have never dived it in mid to late winter, so I don't know where it will go in temperature.

I couldn't find anything on Chatfield's web page about diving. Perhaps there was never any mention of it.

Tried to call the park office and ask but couldn't reach anyone. I'm assuming Kingfisher Pond is still okay?

Carter Lake is pretty much the same as Aurora Res., 6 ft vis, 10 ft on a good day.

Typically you are talking Kingfisher ponds. Although, they do allow it in the main lake as long as you have a flag. I attempted it once, but picked a bad entry point with multiple sand bars. Boat traffic can be an issue as well. I have heard there is a submerged bridge in there somewhere that could be interesting.

As I understand it, you cannot dive the main reservoir on weekends.

I did it twice looking for a sail that someone lost when her sailboat capsized. The search area was about 11 feet deep. Visibility at the bottom would best be measured in inches. We tried to do a reel search but could not because they had dumped old Christmas trees in the area, I guess to provide a fish habitat. There were no fish in them, though. Motorboats liked my dive flag, because it gave them something to slalom around.

I did not find the sail.

Sounds pretty much like all the lake diving I did in TN. Found a car once by running into it head first.
