VOLUNTEER DIVERS TO CLEAN
WINTER PARK LAKES
WINTER PARK, Fla. an internationally recognized ICMA Excellence Award winner (April 29, 2009) - Keep Winter Park Beautiful (KWPB) and Dayo Scuba are proud to present the first Scuba Lake Cleanup event on Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on several Winter Park lakes including Virginia, Osceola and Maitland. This inaugural lake cleanup is part of the Great American Cleanup presented by Keep America Beautiful. In support of the Great American Cleanup, a variety of events has been and will be hosted by KWPB and held throughout the city from through Saturday, May 30.
The Scuba Lake Cleanup is the first time in Central Florida history that divers have volunteered to clean three lakes. More than fifty divers from across the state of Florida will participate in this event and their efforts will include cleaning litter and debris that has settled to the bottom of each lake. Dayo Scuba, an Orlando training center and dive shop, will provide air refills, supplies and food for the diver volunteers.
The Great American Cleanup is a nationwide program that encourages individuals and organizations to get involved in their communities. Each spring, millions of citizens volunteer to clean and beautify their community. Last year, volunteers assisted in the cleanup of more than 1,480 pounds of litter, planted more than 3,005 trees, and educated nearly 660 individuals on the benefits of recycling.
Keep Winter Park Beautiful is an active volunteer group established in 1991 as an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. Their mission is to beautify, conserve resources, recycle, educate and preserve the environmental legacy of Winter Park. This is accomplished by hosting beautification activities and environmental actions such as the Scuba Lake Cleanup.
Residents of Winter Park are asked to please use caution while using lakes Virginia, Osceola and Maitland on May 2, and to be aware of the dive flag locations that will signify divers below.
