Ok. Repeated experiment. Made sure all the lights are on the brightest setting. All batteries charged equally and scrambled. S12 appears to be the brightest from the start, but dies by 2 hr mark. D550 went somewhere between 2.5 and 3 hrs. D530 while visibly dimmer at the end went 17+ hrs runtime. Pretty amazing.
Thanks. I was looking at the D550 but I'm considering the 530 now.

Product page says there's a safe lock function that prevents mis-operation. How does that work?

If you hold the button down for 5 seconds, the light blinks twice and goes into lock mode. You get it out of lock mode by double-pressing the button; it's a little finicky with how fast to press, but it works.
