Yeah my bad, tax refund would have been a more accurate statement...

I was more trying to be funny. I knew what you meant - in theory. I've just never seen a tax refund in the 20yrs I've been paying taxes. In fact, just found out I have to write a check on April 15th for more money than I would could spend on a rebreather, a new camera, and a two week liveaboard trip in Truk. (On top of the insane amount I've paid all year long.)

I figured that but I was drinking beer when I responded, so subtleties are sometimes lost on me. :P

Yeah, naw I don't particularly care for my job given what I get paid...what I do at work is great, I love it, but what I get paid to do it and the strain it puts on my body, pfft it's a joke. I could make more working at In N Out or Starbucks, which is sad.

Some people think extra money is to spend when it should be to invest. I find it humorous that our government tells Americans that they have too much debt and they need to pay it down, and then they pass a stimulis package, reward poor fiscal behavior, and then tell everyone to spend the money. Go figure

If you have any debt, especially credit cards, PAY IT DOWN, if you don't, save it until you have enough money for a camera and a trip.

I vote camera. I bought a cannon camera and underwater case for around $350. It has been taking awesome pictures for a non professional camera. I didnt have many dives log when I bought it, but having a camera will teach you really fast the skills you need to refine. I enjoy being able to share my experiences with family and friends through the videos and pics I take. Sometimes I will ditch the camera on a second dive just to focus on the dive and not pictures. It all adds different experiences.

If you take care of the camera it will last a really long time. Spend the $350 on that, then use the rest for your diving which you can take pictures of.

Ok, I'm not trying to be a jerk but, it sounds like you are not happy with your current job (I wouldn't be either). Maybe you should take the $500 and Start a new career path or advance the one you are on. Then there will be more money for dive trips and cameras. Probably not the answer you want. With the information that you added its hard for me to give you advice on how to spend more than a week of your pay.

Hey emttim,
Better yet, use the money to go on the Channel Islands trip and think about a new career path during your SI's. That is when you're not studying for that exam you're suppose to get. :crafty:

Submariner,
He's a college student. They usually don't make very much money until they have that piece of paper in their hand. He's still working on his lifes goals. :eyebrow:

I would go on a trip, or buy some other gear rather than a camera. Enjoy DIVING first, take pics later on. Not only will your pics be better because you are more comfortable in the water, but you will be better at spotting the more interesting critters to photo.

Now, for some really irresponsible words to live by: it doesn't matter if you have a 50 million dollar estate, or you are being chased by creditors. Are you happy with your life? Having fun? In the end you are just as dead and money only buys a bigger stone. There is more to life than money, don't miss the good stuff...

Yeah, it's not exactly a problem to complain about really.

It's actually the deductions that hurt me. Property taxes are so high here in NJ (my town specifically) that I get hit with a big AMT bill because my deductions are "too high" for someone with my income. Ironically, if I made more money the same deductions would be "in line" for someone at a higher income and I would not get hit with the AMT.

Good news is it doesn't trigger interest or penalties, so it's basically a "reverse refund" in that I got a 5-figure interest free loan from the government, with a lump sum repayment due on April 15th.

But the REALLY good news is I'll be in Bonaire on April 15th!
