I stumbled upon two al 80s that were born in 1994. They have supposedly only been used five times and have been stored with air in them. The last hydro date is 2001 and they have J-valves.

The guy is offering the two of them for $90 OBO and I can get a fresh hydro and vip for $25 each, so I am looking at $140 to get the two usable again.

Since they are aluminum and 15yrs old now, do you guys think I should bother with them?

Thanks!

1994 should be fine at most shops for fills (if you're worried about some arbitrary "15 year rule" your shop may have, you can call them prior to buying to confirm they'll fill it). But are you going to be diving them with j-valves? If not, replacing them with standard K-valves will typically add another $40 per tank or so, at which point they're no longer a great deal.

Honestly, I don't mind the j-valves... The tank that I have used a few times now that is borrowed has a j-valve, so I am used to checking the the reserve knob in my pre-dive routine.

In that case, $90 for two tanks is pretty good. Two things I would do first:

1. Check to see if the valves need to be serviced and how much that would cost.

2. Have the seller commit to giving you a refund if the tanks fail hydro.

+1. I just bought two second hand Al 80s, both in hydro, but born in 1991, for $100 each. So that is a good comparative for you.

I agree Gombessa however without even seeing the tanks and if they will even pass hydro I would be careful in this purchase or else you may end up with some expensive scrap aluminum. If it were me, I will not purchase any tank unless the hydro and VIP are current at least then you know that the tanks have been looked at by a shop or a hydro facility.

They will make a really cool mailbox if they fail hydro, just cut off the end and add a hinge paint them like a dive flag and mount them on a post in the front yard, well worth 90$.

Old aluminium tanks with a stained load in storage? I'd pass at that price, but for a different comparative from Rhone Man, I picked up two used AL80s with K valves out of hydro for $50 for the pair. $140 with J valves? No thanks.

I'm a bit up in the air on this one. What would you prefer, tanks that are out of hydro, or tanks that have a few months to a year left on hydro?

IMO, the out of hydro tanks can be more attractive for the following reasons:

1) You're not paying an "in-hydro" price for tanks that are just about to go out of hydro.

2) You can usually get a "refund on fail" condition from the seller. If you buy a tank with any time left on hydro, you're usually in hole, since the seller won't know if the tank was bad when you received it, or if you abused it after purchase. Also, any money you save from not having to get a hydro done now will have to be paid in a few months anyways, with the same uncertainty but without the insurance.

3) On the flipside of 3, You're getting the benefit of a fresh hydro on tanks you otherwise know nothing about, rather than trusting that they've been taken care of over the last 4+ years.

For me, if we're talking 2+ years left on hydro, I'm pretty happy. Anything close to a year left I'd personally only pay out-of-hydro prices, or get the seller to guarantee it passing hydro immediately on purchase.

Also, I've seen various prices for new AL80s lately. I bought two AL80s with 300bar DIN or convertible pro-valves, with brand new hydros and stage rigging kits, for around $100 recently. An LDS near me was just selling brand new AL80s with yoke valves for $99 during a sale last weekend, and I've seen these tanks online from $120-150 regularly across the country.

At those prices, I'd only buy used if I was sure I was getting a really good deal.

Thanks for the opinions so far guys. If the seller agrees to a refund-on-fail of inspection I may go ahead with the deal... And since he did say OBO, I will see if I can haggle a bit :)
