No Fish:
I think that this is the best advice so far.

This way you will enjoy yourself more and not have to worry about busting up or dealing with that camera. It is hard to take pictures of yourself anyway. (although I do it).

Good Advice No Fish
I will see if my instructor is willing to snap a few shots for me. That’s all I am looking for anyway. I’m not looking for a masterpiece; just want to document the moment.
As a photographer, I am often so focused on getting the shot that I forget to lower the camera and enjoy the moment. This is a big event for me and I would hate to miss it.
If I am feeling very comfortable during the tour part of the last dive I might snap a few pics.
Thanks,

H2Andy:
hey heffey... the task overload may get to you at some point in the dive.

why not hand the camera to the instructor to begin with, and asking them to
take a few pics of you?

you'll have plenty of time to work on task loading later!

I am half with Andy on this one, in that you probably want to focus on diving a littel before you start focusing on doing stuff while diving.

The othier thing is that your instructor is not allowed to have a camera during training sessions at the open water level. It breaks PADI standards (if it is a PADI course).

They are not allowed to hunt lobsters or other stuff either, they should probably be focussed on the safety of teh students and the effectiveness of the learning experience.

Heffey,

I would leave the camera on the shore. You'll have plenty of time to take pictures after you're certified. Taking photos during checkouts may prove distracting to you, your instructor, or your classmates.
