First, I hope I'm not repeating any earlier threads.

I just saw Open Water (the movie). I compiled a long list of the mistakes, oversights, etc. But the most fundamental things I saw are the following:

1. The opeartor only used a tally sheet for headcount instead of a name roll call list.
2. The couple hibernated during the boat trip out to the first site.

Here's my question ... If an operator is only tallying heads should you challenge them to keep a name list?

MaxBottomtime:
Not only a name list, but check in as soon as the divers get back to the swimstep. Another obvious mistake was not swimming hard each time they saw another boat.

You mean swim towards the boats they saw miles away? I don't remember seeing any boats in that movie that were close enough for them to swim to. I think their thinking was to stay closer to the original dive site for possible rescue, even though current was taking them further away.

When they first surfaced there was a boat that appeared to be less than 1/2 mile away behind them. they said another boat was a little farther to camera left, out of the shot. Even if they had remained exactly above the dive site, the DM didn't know they were missing until nearly 24 hours later. They would have probably encountered more sharks there than drifting into open sea. Getting out of the water should have been the main priority, whether it was the correct boat or not. I don't remember the details of the Lonergan's story, which Open Water was based, but I seem to recall that it was more than one day before they were discovered missing.

I have yet to see the movie, but the reviews I have heard is that it is a story "similar" to that which might have happened to the lonagans or inspired by events.... That is pretty loose and I suspect was just to create a little hype for the movie.

The lonagans had three possible scenarios.

1 murder suicide,
2 negligence/accidental death
3 faked death.

As far as the movie, it seems to have bombed and most people seem th think of it as a bit of a joke. I certainly havent seen any worried divers or even had a single concerned question about it..

Ok, thanks, so bottomline --- always make sure the operator is using a name roll.

It cost only $130,000 to make and was bought by Lion's Gate for $2.5 million. I'm not sure what the box office grosses were or home video sales(it was just released last week), but it certainly couldn't be considered a bomb. I didn't care for it too much, but at least Blanchard Ryan had a full frontal scene. :D

Accounting for all the divers has been discussed many times on this board. The physical "tag-in, tag-out" system is perhaps the best (similar to the tag-in, tag-out system used by miners for ages).

Absolutely... If they do not, tell them to. Insist on it. It is YOUR SAFETY that is in the balance.

I was reading a movie site recently about it, and it grossed in the neighborhood of $30 million. Not a bad return. Certainly not the Blair Witch Project potential they were hyping, but a decent investment. And that's not including the rental side of things.
