If your luggage is to be searched, it will be on videotape.
But given my past experience, I wouldn't believe it.

My sister and B-in-Law just returned from a Caribbean vacation. Their brand new camera, bag, lenses and film were all stolen from their luggage during their return Air Transport. The reason all was brand new is that they were mugged on a South American vacation earlier in the year, and their previous equipment had been taken then.

If their bags had been locked - would it have prevented this? - probably.

Scuba-sass :-)

Scuba Sass:
So sorry to hear about their equipment. You're the 3rd story I have heard since the new ' law' has come into effect.
I've been telling my clients to keep all valuables like, jewelry, and camera equipment, with them in their carry on. Never put money, or meds, or anything you couldn't live without in the checked luggage.
Only clothes, and cosmetics should go in the checked luggage.
Scuba equipment should be insured.
We have been told if someone goes through your luggage they are required to leave a note saying someone has been in there.
Of course during the holidays no wrapped packages.

Wouldn't their equipment clause kick in if all your gear was lost or stolen in transit to a dive vacation?

Hi, Gang,

This is just one more example of the inability of our government bureaucracy to think a problem completely through! If you think that insurance companies will bear the burden, think again. Once the claims start coming in, you will see waivers, increased premiums, and cancellations: these companies are in business to serve customers AND to make a profit. They will not make up for government deficiencies.

There is simply no way to carry on all your valuable scuba gear! So, it will be at risk. And, guess what: bags of scuba gear tend to weigh more, so, they will be obvious targets for the dishonest.

Anybody out there remember "Brave New World"? Well, this might be one of the themes of a rewriten "Brave New World"!

If your luggage is searched they are suppose to put a seal on it notifying you that your baggage has been searched.

ID,
It's not the search that bothers me...Search it 10 times if they want. My problem is the fact that they say the bags have to go throughout the entire system unlocked.
I don't think it will be the inspectors stealing the goods.
I doubt that a tag or label stating that the bag was searched is going to keep a dishonest luggage handler from picking through it.

PS...They now say to carry on ALL film. The explosive detection equipment has a high likelihood of exposing the film.

I just zip tie everything and put all the valuables in my carry on. Of course my carry on is heavier than crap but it's safe. Just got back from Maui and all baggage was zip tied with no problems. 4 big dive bags all OK. When I went to Cabo they(Mexican authorities) broke open my lock and broke the zipper on a bag, but didn"t take anything. I've been traveling enough in third world countries to know that they can take anything they want whenever they want, keep everything you need to live on your body and in your carry on.=-)
