That's pretty cool. The ship if 6 ft longer than the Titanic! That's big. Havn't heard about this one. There's one ship planed to be sunk in Keys - Vandenburg?(can't remeber name). Was used in movie Virus. Saw that http://www.divemiami.com/home.htm includes map of where it will be sunk. Any idea how deep water is out there?

You guys really know how to make a guy feel old. The USS Oriskany, aka USS Zippo for it's frequent fires, was the first ship I served on.

But that's not as bad as when I discovered that the USS California (DLGN36/CGN36, not BB44) that I joined while it was still in the shipyard being built, had gone to the scrap heap a few years ago.

The info on this site is really lacking. How deep do they plan on sinking this carrier? That would be a good thing to go watch. Just hope they don't **** it up like they did the Speigel Grove!

Someone's counting their chickens before they hatch... my bet is that Escambia County and not Miami will win this one, and the "O" boat will be sunk just off the tip of the nipple about 17 miles offshore between Pensacola and Destin. It'll be about 240' to the sand; 50' to the top of the wreck. Something for everyone.

Anybody know what's happening the sinking of the Vandenburg in Key West?

from the scuttlebutt I've heard is that the FWC has granted the Pensacola permit - IF the Navy releases the ship.

I think that seals it as being near the Nipple, which from my point of view is fabulous. You can bet I'll be out there as soon as is practical once she's down.
