One strobe or two?

If you start with a single strobe the normal position for it is above the lens you can try other positions but I found that in macro a single strobe set above the lens produces pretty good results. The downside is you need the arm extension. The advantage is less to carry and control, having said this I have dived with dual flashes for a long time but just having one isnt so bad.

2 110a's (assuming they are a's)for $800 sounds like a great deal to me. A Inon Z240 would cost you that.
 
I personally vote strongly for two strobes rather than one powerful strobe. When working close, with wide or with macro, with a camera such as the G9 that does not have small apertures like an f 16 or f22, you will not need the extra power nearly as often as you will like the effect of the second strobe.
