Thought I'de just mention we have one opening left on the shark dive. See below for details. If someone from this group signs up I will dive outside of the cage with the sharks.

Don't all apply at once :)

I don't think the details came through on the post. At least I don't see them :11:

I'd love to do that dive! Pretty sure I'm still on for AOW course this w/end, though. But please post the specs....never know.....I've only been waiting a year to take the class. The bonus of you outside the cage?? Might be worth blowing off the class for another month...... :D

I was just informed that ther are 1 openings left on our shark dive off Block Island and asked if I know of any interested parties. He is asking $170 possibly subject to lowering. But if anyone is interested I will provide the contact info. Weather is scheduled to be nice this weekend 8/28/05.

The boat is leaving from Point Judith area at around 8am. It is with Snappa Charters whose Captain is widely known to have a good track record of locating the sharks.

We also have a reporter fron the New Haven Register coming with us.

Last years shark dive was a great success and the video-ographer I dive with is filming another one. The dive will be aired on local public stations after the video is compiled.

You realize it would be a really good story for that reporter if one of you gets eaten.... be sure to search your dive gear to make sure he/she didn't hide a steak in your BC prior to the dive. :D

Thanks for the tip RIO. Thankfully have only a tiny pocket for my BC but I am open to any and all tips to dive safely with these sharks outside the cage.

Ummm don't look or act like food? Sorry. I would LOVE to dive with sharks *puts on green-eyed monster face*
From what I've read and videos I've watched it's a good idea to keep your eye on as many sharks as possible at all times. If I were in this situation I'd want to be back to back with my buddy and just keep rotating slowly, that might take some practice though. If something really cool (read: large and lethal) like a GW shows up you're supposed to make sure it knows that you see it because they are typically ambush predators. Eye contact is recommended (yes I know eye contact with a shark sounds silly) and either hold your ground or swim *a little* closer unlike when dealing with grizzly bears. Trying to look large an inedible might also be helpful ;) I've heard makos and oceanic whitetips can be agressive but I've never read anything about dealing with them so when in doubt get back in the cage! I personally wouldn't stay in the water with a tiger shark (read: swimming garbage can) although some people aren't bothered by them, I'd rather take my chances with the GW. From what I hear you will most likely see lotsof blues, which are my most favorite animal, and apparently don't find divers overly appetizing and maybe even a basking shark!
I hope you have lots of fun :D

That actually sounds like good sensible advice. Since I am verbally contracted to outside the cage, going back in it may not be an option. I appreciate the tips and will definitly heed probably most of it. I expect mostly if not all to be blue sharks.

Thanks Gidds

Oh I forgot: apparently many sharks do not appreciate bubbles. Peter Benchley and his wife used thier purge valves to get out of a hairy situation with thier young son. Also I would keep my limbs as close to my body as possible to avoid unwanted contact with sharks dashing around in feeding mode. Did I mention I was jealous? ;) Have fun, can't wait to read all about it :D

They usually give you sawed off broom handles wth lanyards to push the sharks away if they get too "friendly".

Have a great time -- looking forward to a full trip report.

There's still an open spot on the Monday charter, as well. 8/29. Anyone who wants to go, PM me or call Charlie.

I'll be filming, as well.
