As I understand, a too quick ascent from depth can cause an instance of DCS. In my case, ascent was within the parameters set out by PADI, as were the deepest depth and total bottom time.
I have come to believe that toefa may have hit upon the cause of my problem. I do remember that my air intake was unusually wet (at the time, I thought it was a feature of the Mares Proton regulator, according to their advertising). I may have aspirated (breathed in) salt water, which may have led to the long, deep coughing spells upon return to the deck... which may have led to my DCS.
However, I really don't know and am just thankful that this has (so far) been a one-off experience.
