Police investigations continue today into the death of a visitor following a diving trip yesterday. The man in his 40s was part of a group of eight who had come to Scilly to dive. They were diving off Dave McBrides boat Tiburon near the Bishop Rock yesterday at around 9.30am, when the man surfaced unconscious.
He was flown to Treliske Hospital in Truro on the RNAS Culdrose helicopter.
The St Marys lifeboat was launched just before 10am and took a second member of the group, who became unwell following a rapid ascent, towards the mainland.
RNLB The Whiteheads was intercepted by a second rescue helicopter near to Wolf Rock.
The second male was flown to a specialist decompression unit at Fort Bovisand in Plymouth and is expected to make a full recovery.
The family of the deceased man, who lived in the South East of England, has been informed.
Yesterday evening two CID officers were flown to St Marys on the police helicopter from Penzance to carry out investigations.
They are now acting for the Isles of Scilly Coroner and have taken some equipment used by the dive group. That will be checked by mainland-based experts.
Sergeant Colin Taylor says they will be based at St Marys for the next day or two and will be taking statements.
He says the death is being treated as unexplained at this stage.
