A FB friend now living there offered to loan me his spare. I didn't really need one but for $15 I thought I'd go for the Verizon package. When that failed, I relied on Skype. $3 for the month, call the US as much as I wanted, cancel when I got home.

I did send 93 texts while there, as well as receiving, but got those for free in the long run with Verizon giving me a refund without removing the service until I got back.
