Are you going someplace neat?

"Assignment" isn't that what Walter Cronkite nammed his sail boat so when he went on vacation he could say he was "on assignment"?

Have a safe trip, thinking of you both often,
God Bless,
Marc

I'll bet they are, some place like Fiji....

I would LOVE to tell you guys that we were spending 10 days in the south pacific, but not quite. But it is still a very cool assignment!!!!! We are covering the Riviera Maya from Holbox (whalesharks and giant mantas!!!) Cancun (yes we will actually dive Cancun - never done that!!) Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Puerta Aventuras (reef & cenotes) and finish it in Majawal which is down south by Chinchorro Bank. It is both underwater & topside, will be a whirlwind (dive in the morning, shoot topside in the afternoon, travel to the next city at night) and we are soooooooo looking forward to it!!!!!
I will miss anybody that is going to be here, and am really sorry. Hope I can make it up to them!!!
Not even sure which issue of Sport Diver this is for......but will keep you posted!
Happy Bubbles!!!!!!

Holly - Please have some coconut shrimp for me at La Lunita in Akumal, and a Cafe La Lunita for dessert. Oh, and also some sticky buns and a smoothie from Turtle Bay Bakery Cafe. What the heck, Turtle's french toast breakfast too (with the pecan maple syrup, please.) And since Lucy's is only a few feet away, either mango or coconut ice cream, whichever she's made that day. Enjoy Akumal, but for the story, just say that there's really nothing much there, no nice reefs to dive, no cenotes close by worth visiting, all the restaurants are awful... you get the idea. No need to attract any attention. If you've never dived there and can request some site, hit Gorgonian, Yalku Norte, The Nets and Tarpon Reef.

Thank You!!!! I am printing out your recommendations to take with me and will follow them!!!!! Yeah, I know what you mean - I wish the whale sharks of Holbox were still a secret too!!!
Hey - maybe (I am saying MAYBE!!!) I can write a trip report when I get back - I always love reading all of the members reports - here is MY chance!!!!!!
Happy Bubbles!

You're welcome! I'm a wealth of Akumal info. 5 trips in 3 years and going back again in December (4 days Coz 4 days Akumal). Just give me a shout if you want any more info on dive sites or restaurants, happy hours, non-diving diversions... Which shop are you diving with? It's mostly shallow (less then 75ft) reef dives with very little current, but the reefs are pretty lush. Not the colorful spectacular stuff that Coz has, more of the fans and soft stuff and some of the biggest elkhorn I've seen anywhere. We see more fish and big stuff (like Eagle Rays right up by the boat and feet from the shore) in Dec, but it's just such a wonderfully relaxing and very laid back place that it's a pleasure to be there anytime. This is prime turtle nesting season. A very cool thing to do, if you have some evening time and are interested, is to sign up with the CEA (Akumal's ecological society www.ceakumal.org) to be on a Turtle Walk team. They have turtle specialist (biologists I think) and CEA trained volunteers who will take tourists on the beach night walks to help mark and protect the nests, and help any wayward turtles.

Not sure if you know this guy, but an Akumal cave diver just told me about him last week. Len Bucko. www.lenbuckophoto.com. Obviously you don't need his courses, but, he could be a great resource for advance info about the best places and times to shoot, especially the cenotes.

I've been intersted in Holbox since I first heard about it in '91 when I was on Isla Mujeres. Due its location I don't think it will ever become that touristy, which is great. I just wish it was easier to get to. I'd love to hear about your trip. Isla Mujeres was always great but just started getting too many Cancun party boats for my taste.

Hope you have a wonderful trip! Looking forward to hearing about the whale sharks!

Will see you at the PADI Dive Fiesta at the end of July :) Looking forward to meeting you.

Surely you see the paradox there... ;^)
