it has been three seasons so far, the closest I have come is a 5.5 lb I got off vero beach shore diving. I mostly dive alone because I have not found anyone to dive with who likes to gather as there main goal and believes in the fillet and release program
 
Why don't you release the big ones, especially the females, so they can reproduce more lobbies?
 
I am not going to be a preachy type as I am anything but a tree hugger, but I could not agree more with Dr Bill.

Leave those big mommas if you can.

It has been my opinion that those big 5 lb plus monsters need to be making us babies.
It is also my experience that the 5+ bugs pretty much have the consistancy of tree bark.
But the legs and knuckles taste great.

I am by nature a freaking caveman though. When I see a lobzilla, I want to bring it home to the family and be recognized as master hunter gatherer.
There is something primevil about bringing home the dinosaur meat I must admit.
I am getting better at just taking a picture after I tickle them out into the open, and posting to facebook or something..
I am a trophy hunter with a camera more and more these days.

Which I admit is asking alot since it was in 1980. The lobster we have here start there journey in the sargasso sea as plankton and drop off and settle to the bottom around the gulf and keys. would that not make our eggs just end up as foodstuff in the north atlantic. I could be wrong and if I am please let me know with better evidence than I have offered. I will continue to eat the big ones there is no difference in texture or taste that I can detect.
 
I cannot commit on the Florida lobster population but the California Lobster fishery has been in trouble for the past 25 possibly 30 years.

Since the beginning of recreational sport diving harvesting limit has been reduced from ten to seven, from a maximum size and a minimum size to the current measuring of 3-1/4 carapace length

The current minimal size limits established by F&G (Fish and Game) is based upon the sexual maturing of the lobster and a reproduction cycle of at least one time to create a sustained stable lobster population.

Therefore, the current lobster population would remain stable if each legal female produced, from the excess of 500,000 eggs it carries, a minimum of two lobsters that reached legal maturity within its lifetime.

As the lobster matures and increases in weight, the number of eggs it produces and carries also increases.

Therefore, a ten-pound lobster, which is estimated at fifteen to twenty or more years old, could carry in excess of one million eggs, producing at each mating season approximately four lobsters that will reach sexual maturity. A ten-pound lobster is a grand mother many times over and has probably mated ten or more seasons and could count perhaps a minimum of thirty or more mature lobsters as offspring. If the lobster remains in the wild, it can be expected to continue to grow and continue to increase its production of eggs many fold as long as it survives.

It would be appropriate and is suggested that the harvesting of all large lobsters be curtailed and especially the larger females to ensure a stable, possibly even a larger lobster population for the divers of the future.
By harvesting the large ones; males and especially the females the future of the lobster population can be seriously damaged. Capture them if it satisfies a need for the experience, take a picture and return to the wild immediately and the future of recreational lobster diving is assured
 
Catching the BIG ones of many species has been one factor that has led to precipitous declines in their populations. This is one reason why slot limits (take only thgose above a minimum size and below a maximum size) should be instituted and "trophy" hunting should disappear for many species of fish and invertebrates.

As far as your original posting Idivealone, to my mind, there is no shortage of bugs here in Florida.
Sure, they get pounded in the Keys in July for 2 days, and they have disappered from most of the marinas where we used to pick them off easily when I was a kid, but they remain plentiful for the sport divers that do a little research, and the lobstermen seem to keep putting their pots in the water year after year.
Dr. Bill says that things are different in California, so it would be a local decision as to bug or not to bug.
The increasing of our Florida size limit to 3 1/4" would not bother me here in Florida as far as the Carribean Spiny's goes.
If I am having a good day, meaning I already have two in the bag, and I find a female or closer to short than not bug, I pretty much just let them off with a warning.

The phyllosome larva hatch as transparent spider-looking plankton. These flattened larva molt 11 times while floating in the water column for a year or more. The phyllosoma then settle and becoming swimming pueruli (Sterrer 1992). Puerli molt and become benthic juveniles when they encounter suitable inshore substrate, such as mangrove roots or seagrass beds. Early benthic lobsters are solitary but soon become aggregative and migrate offshore where they develop into adults. Molting continues to occur in adults when growth is necessary (Marx and Herrnkind 1986).

I am still looking for min temp information i don' know if they can survive in the North Atlantic which is where the gulfstream would take.
 
Don't know what it weighed but the biggest lobster I have ever seen had a tail bigger around than my thigh.
