Has any one had any experience with the OMS Side Mount Rec Adapter? I have looked for some reviews and information but have not found anything that says how well it actually works.

Yes I know it is not a dedicated or designed for side mount system but is it worth considering to convert my SS bpw into a side mount platform. I will not be doing cave or major wreck penetrations and dives would be in the recreational or slightly below recreational depths with little or no deco obligations.

Thanks for any information.

you are still going to have to find a way to restrain your wing and it is highly unlikely that you will be able to get it to trim properly with the lift profile of backmount wings. I.e. sidemount needs all the lift at your butt, none at your shoulders, and most wings have a fairly even lift profile with most having a slight bias towards the top. Realistically I think you're going to be fighting it quite a bit and it just isn't worth that hassle to save a couple $$

Most places are liquidating these right now and they are going to be a helluva lot better than the OMS system....

Funnily enough, I just did a write-up on this yesterday...

The OMS REC Sidemount Adapter

I used the Tec version (used to be called the Profile Adapter) and it was an adequate way of turning a wing into a sidemount. It works best when combined with a soft backplate. Get creative with some bungee wing shaping, and you could have a relatively pleasant rig.

I have experience with the Profile, the original OMS adapter. The new Rec unit is very similar. I have used the Profile with a SS BP, and with a soft BP, and it can be made to work as a SM platform. It is not ideal, but functional for recreational SM diving. I bought a couple of Profiles to see how they would work with BPs, for training purposes.

For Open Water SM diving it is useable. I think that units specifically designed for SM are a better choice for someone starting fresh - without any BPs or wings, for example. But, you can use the Adapter to begin your SM journey. If you become serious about tweaking your rig over time, you may well find that you want to move to a true SM rig.

Tbone makes a very good point about wings. With the Rec Adapter, you will see some taco, particularly if you use a wider 'doubles' backmount wing. And, most BM wings do not provide the triangular lift distribution that is optimal in SM diving.

Good write up! Been looking at this option for my first foray into SM, I think with some good tweaking it'll work well for me. Just don't have the $$ for a dedicated SM rig right now, besides the prices are outrageous. I know they will come down when the new shiny wears off.

I plan an trying SM in open water tech-reational wreck type diving. I already dive in a OMS dir bpw rig and have a 30 lb donut wing for single tank which I think that rec adapter would work great to convert my rig for SM.
