I just recieved my small OMS SPG from LP, I was surprised by two things...

1. It was a little rough around the edges where the top and bottom come together, and the metal case seemed a little scratched up.

2. It is nickel colored.

Here comes the stupid question. Is it really brass? I've always thought of brass as being that yellow-ish brass color, not nickel colored. Just curious.

thx,

the brass is plated.... nobody makes brass SPGs that aren't plated. the scratches aren't normal, I've bought a few OMS gauges in the past few years and they all were clean and unscratched. the rough edges may be where the plating hasn't been smoothed out. mine all have a little edge on them but nothing you couldn't rub against your skin.

Ok, thanks. I think I'll see about getting it replaced. I just showed it to my wife and her comment was that it definitely looks used, and the rough edge gives you the feeling that if you applied pressure and rubbed, you might cut yourself.

Brass tarnishes quite easily in a sea water environment so it is almost always chrome plated. The finish of the chrome may be polished or have a sand blasted appearance or be anywhere in between - just depends on what look they are going for in terms of style.

Chrome plating does not adhere to brass either due to their respective electrolytic properties so an intermediate plating is used to stick the two together. This is normally a copper plating if I remember correctly.

Chrome plating won't hide surface or finsishing defects in the underlying brass and the rough edges sound like a substandard quality control issue. The scratched surface also makes me suspect a previous purchaser used it for their dive trip before returning it due to the rough edges.

normally is done in several steps.

First a copper plate.
Second a nickel plate.
Then the chrome.

This is leaving out all of the cleaning and polishing steps that are also in there.

Sounds used. I doubt it would get out of OMS that way. The retailer either demo'd it or it was a return. Did you get a deal on it, or pay full price?

Sorry to hear...As a comparison, I rec'd the same item from LP back in November and it was in terrific "brand new" shape, no probs at all...

And I don't perceive any issues with an edge being rough....
