OMS bcd questions

I agree completely with you Tim, but I'm curious of why dive dry in Hawaii, I was under the impression that you could get away with a 3mm fullbody like here in the tropics.

Here in PR the average water temp is 78-80 deg, How cold is the water in Hawaii?

reason... cuz I get cold! lol - seriously that is why, Water temps vary from 73*-84*. a 3mil is fine for most folks visiting, most DMs around here eventually go to a 7mil. When I dive I don't move much at all, so even with my natural "insulation" I end up shivering after 45-60 minutes... dry solved the problem believe it or not there are several of us diving dry in Hawaii (Onfloat here on the board is another) the owners of my lds are considering dry suits as well. We are a growing population...

60 pounds seems a bit big for a single tank.

Nope, you could use any of the wings with the single tank adapter, it's just too much wing.

I currently use the OMS 32Lb travel wing and it is great. (o.k. had to shorten the hose). I've seen people use the 60lb bungie with singles and it is very clumsy. For my doubles I use the OMS 45lb wing and it's fine. I've used that with steel 98's and 3 Al 80s and AL 40 and it was pleanty of lift.



Tim, I'm getting my dry suit in March so there will be one more dry diver in hawaii.

You shiver in 45-60 minutes in 80' water...I assist in teaching classes in a 2.5mm shorty in our pool which is 80' and I over heat. A normal dive for us up here (Maine) is 34-50' and I dove that for a long time in a 7mm. However, I was down south doing a bit of diving this summer and got spoiled. Came back up here and was freeeezing. Its funny how your body gets used to a certain climate.

Most criticism of OMS stuff is the bungied wings.

The IQ type harnesses tend to be criticized for more potential failure points .

There is absolutely no problem with bungied wings, I have been diving my OMS bungied wing for 8 years and never once had any of the issues people claim you will. They are neat and tidy and you don't get all that tank wrap / flapping about you get from unbungied wings.

As for the IQ pack "potential failure points" - never once happened to me and I have never heard of it happening either, the people who critise them don't know what they are talking about.

Humm, with a shorty, I use to shiver after less than 10 min in the water, problem got solved when I got the 3mm full, I think that anything lower than 75* may freeze my butt .

Back to business, I use the 45# bungied for singles, and it works great, I may be better with a 32#, but I feel no diference with the DR Travel wings on my BP, so I stick with the 45# due to it's bulletproof construction.
