As you all know :bawling: my 5050 flooded. I do have a spare 5050 and have 2 housings (that I am going to get over hauled). I really want to keep my 5050 going for as long as I can, but fear to use the 2nd one with out a back up. Paranoid, I know.
I have been combing ebay and the cameras still are selling for good money. Which led me to think a new camera (Evolt 330) would be the better choice. Then Hubby said call olympus, see if they still offer the flood deal that you got last time. Now due to the fact that the 5050 is discontinued I was hesitant to call olympus about what they could do for me....and surprise, surprise they still offer the deal that I got 2 years ago. I send in my camera and they will fix or trade it for $185. I'd have a short warrenty and coming from the factory it should be all good - better than buying a used one off ebay :D.

Wow Lisa, that's GREAT news :D ~~

Great news for me and everybody else that has a 5050 in use :D

(BTW - What camera did you get for yourself after your break in?)

My experience wasn't the same. They offered me a refurb for a higher price than I paid for my 5060 new.

maybe it was because it was a 5060? Which office did you deal with? I know the one in CA is better than the other one.

I don't remember which I called to be honest. I sent the camera into the CA office though, funny thing is, they immediately sent it to NY after it arrived there.

Anyway, I ended up saving money by buying another 5060 brand new and told them to send me my paperweight back(they wanted to keep it?.).

Of course!....lol,They are sneaky that way...they would have fixed it and given it to someone like me with a 5060 ;)

I bought another 5050 so I could continue to use the rest of my set up... been thinking about upgrading to a DSLR but not willing to replace all of my gear just yet... I want to get better with THIS gear ;)

I love the 5050 too because it has the fast 1.8 lens, takes widely available AA batteries, and is faster shooting in some ways than its successors -- but last year I decided to move to the from the C5050 to the C7070, which has pros and cons. It seems to have a harder time focusing in low light due to the slower lens, but the image quality is better in adequate light.

Initially I chose the Olympus PT-027 housing for this c-7070, but like my PT-015, it would creak as a went deep, and I started reading about floods due to O-rings popping out on the bottom left side. Since my last dive trip, I've decided I just can't risk my cameras in the Olympus housings, it's time to go with a more reliable housing, from Ikelite.

My reasons are simple. I don't live in Hawaii :-( , so my dive trips are expensive. A lot of the pleasure is from underwater photography. I don't want a flood to diminish my enjoyment of dive trips. Even if a loss is insured, the trip would be impacted if I had a flood. Compared to the cost of a dive trip, the increased housing cost is small. The difference is $350, less than the price of a flooded camera.

I've had a good run with the Olympus housings for these great cameras, but for me it's time to move on to something more reliable.
