I have a Olympus 8010 in a ikekite case and external af35 flash. How do I stop the camera flash from firing twice and triggering the external flash prior to the camera taking the picture.

Thanks

Set the flash to Fill In. The flash will fire regardless.

It is however the camera flashes twice, pre-flash and flash. It takes the pictures on flash. Problem is the external flash is being triggered on the preflash resulting in dark pictures. I want the camera to flash once so when the external flash goes off when the camera is actually taking the picture.

I was talking about the cameras flash, not the AF35 strobe.
Fill In fires the camera flash (once) regardless of the available light. Your 8010 is set to Redeye, which produces a pre flash.
Page 28 on the manual explains the different flash settings

I understand what you were saying however regardless of flash mode or camera mode on two 8010s. It will flash twice regardless. Although these cameras work great for snorkeling I am now looking at another brand of camera for scuba. Thanks for your time

Simply Changing to a different camera may not change your world much.

Most (many, all?) modern compact cameras generate multiple flashes.
many modern strobes have a setting to accomodate this (there was a rash of "digital ready" strobe advertising awhile ago)

The multiple flashes allow the camera to figure out proper exposure.

It is not always obvious which combo of camera and strobe settings is the correct one. You can test by pointing at a mirror and then trying every possible camera / strobe setting combination. Some camera / strobe setups are not compatible.

True enough but in this case this camera/flash isn't going to work because it is getting fooled by external flash resulting in dark or black pictures. I am not going to spend any more time trying to get it to work together. As stated before it is a good camera for snorkeling but I am researching other cameras/flash for scuba.

Thank for your input

Ok posted from another board and Scott here. The camera now flashes once.

In the menus (Shooting menu 2) > set to remote flash > slave. This adds another overlooked setting in flash options redeye, no flash, auto, etc. It was overlooked because I had it set to "fill in" so I didnt tab through flash options. The new option was SLV Once it was set to SLV. The camera flashed once triggering the ext flash resulting in correctly exposed pictures. Going out today (in Houduras) and will try it.

If you have the camera set to fill flash and the AF35 in the Auto mode, then the AF35 should be triggered on the actual flash from the camera and not the pre-flash. If you use the slave setting, then the AF35 needs to be set in manual mode. You will have to set the AF35 intensity manually as there will be no TTL function. Since the AF35 has been flashing on the pre-flash I am wondering if you have the AF35 set to one of the manual modes (which would cause the flash to fire on the pre-flash from the camera) rather than set to Auto when the camera is set to fill. The fact that it worked in the slave mode correctly suggests to me that you have the AF35 set to a manual rather than the Auto mode. If you do have the settings correct, then I am wondering if there is a problem with the Auto mode on the AF35. Good luck with your diving.

This was the fix. The AF35 was adjusted for flash intensity

Took very good pictures

thanks all for the info
