Hi All,

I am looking at the new Olympus C8080 and am interested in anyone who has or knows of anyone who has taken underwater pictures with the Olympus housing and the wide angle attachment. For the kind of diving I do I'll probably go with the new Ikelite housing when it comes out but I am interested in the wide angle options and any problems that might have.

Cheers,
James.

i've moved this portion of your post here to get you good answers

hmmm..... I thought I heard that the housing wasn't available until June or July...

You may want to contact Yuzo in Japan. I believe he is of the opinion that the 8080 is not a good camera for underwater use with its corresponding housing .
His website is here.

As a camera I don't think you can go wrong with it i.e. if you don't mind the size. It wouldn't inspire me to upgrade from my C5050 but as a stand-alone purchase it's a pretty good camera.

The UW wide angle options are still a little up-in-the-air. With the Ike housing you will get TTL option with Ike strobes. Also, I think Ike will not allow the space in the housing for the pop-up flash so that'll reduce the 'dead space' a bit. See additional comments:

I just ordered the 8080 today, I figure I've got at least a few weeks to figure the camera out before housings are readily available.

Check out the wetpixel.com forums for info on Ikelite's housing. Apparently Ike is mulling over a domed port option which will house the conversion lens. He claims to have acheived "spectacular" results with the normal lens and housing, but at this point his guys are the only one's who've used this camera underwater as of yet.

Good luck, I personally can't wait...hope to have the camera in hand by the weekend.

Steve

Ikelite is still waiting on an Olympus wide angle lens for the 8080 to arrive. We should be able to offer a dome port as we did for the much maligned 5060 camera and lens as shown on following URL of sample photos:

Then click on the Cameras Underwater link on following URL to see their testing and explanation of capability of the Olympus wide angle lens producing coverage like a 15mm Nikonos. The 5060 is an outstanding camera for underwater photos:
