I just don't log dives
I know its short notice. But hey - my stuff just got here and I'm too fired up to sit around the house.

I'm taking my new Oly C5050, PT-015 and Strobe rig to the Point for a half day of dive trials. I'm on a two day boat next weekend to San Clemente, and I want to have a clue (albeit a very small one) before that trip. I've been shooting Oly digital for years, and this is my first UW rig. It showed up a week earlier than anticipated, so I want to get in the water.

I'll be going over on the 6:15 AM from Long Beach and coming back on the 2:05 PM boat. I just want to make a few dives with it, and I figure if I'm in the water by 8:00 ish I can get in three before heading back.

If any of you can make it (Oly shooters or not)... lets roll.

If you don't already have one, go by Sportmart and pick up a collapseable cooler for your rig. It makes for a nice padded carrying case on the boat and an improvised soak tank when you are through diving. One problem with the marine park at Avalon is the lack of fresh water rinse tanks for the camera.

I read about this someplace -maybe here, maybe somewhere else... I've read thousands of threads over the last couple of week... they're all blending together. I have the perfect cooler for this.

Thanks for the heads up...

PS: Here it is

Heading out there on SAT instead of Sunday. I prefer to stay close to home on Sundays - and my Sat opened up, so woo hoo. Good or bad, I'll post some pics tomorrow night... I hope.

So, how did it go?
Was considering joining you today to try my new P10, but you switched days before I had time to ask ... :frown2:

Went well. Dive 1 I dove with someone I met on the boat on the way over... he was early and his club wasn't getting there until later, so we snuck in a shortie so I could leak test the housing at depth.

I didn't leak. Life is good.

Dive two was a solo dive (my first intentional solo dive.) My right foot in my drysuit was a little damp last trip, and it was leaking this trip a little worse.

Dive two - first intentional solo dive, new cam and housing, leaking suit. Three strikes, so I bagged it after about 40 minutes and called it and grabbed the 11:45 boat back to Long Beach.

I was pleased. My shots all suck, but I learned a lot. I'm on a 2 dayer this weekend to SCI, so I need to fix my suit tomorrow.

I'll post some of the pics in the gallery here soon.

On the plus side, I did get to spend a lot of time (in water and out) with Barry Lipman. What a sweet guy. Took all the time I needed to answer all my questions... I wish I could have stayed longer. If the ^#$@%# suit wasn't leaking, I'd have stayed later to hang with this guy. This guy is a photographer.

You went over on Saturday? I heard most boats cancelled..
Ok, sorry just read.. Catalina Expressed it.. :)

As much as I don't like to encourage people to visit Fry's, my recent ****** of good luck with them is just too good to keep from my fellow SoCalers...

I stopped by the Manhattan Beach store - they were selling a demo Oly C-5050 for $299. Well, I was excited, but the mode dial was broken off and it was pretty scratched up. I asked them to check other stores and they said that the stores in City of Industry and Burbank each had 1 camera left over. He couldn't give me price information.

I decided to chance it and drove out to City of Industry. They didn't have the camera on display, but I could see a C-5050 box hiding amongst the C-5060s in the back of a locked drawer. I asked the salesman and he seemed to doubt that they had any left. When I said I spotted the box he opened the drawer and there it was.

Get this - a new Oly C-5050 with all its parts/accessories (opened box) for $379...

Needless to say I picked it up. There is still a halfway decent chance that Burbank has something like it. Also, if anyone knows about Olympus repairs, the demo at Manhattan Beach for $299 might be a good call.

I ordered the PT-015 housing and will pick up a strobe in the future. The camera deal at Fry's (not my favorite place) was incredible. Can't wait to try my new rig out.

Thanks to everyone at Scuba Board for turning me on to the 5050.

You survived the parking lot from hell?! Double congratulations!

Wiser words have not been spoken. The Mervyns/TraderJoes/Panera bread and the Petco/Ralphs/Block Buster by my place (Manchester / Sepulveda) are also on top of the list for worst design, most clueless drivers and overall stress to enter and exit.

But nothing beats Frys in MB. THE WORST ever.

Congrats for making it in and out alive.
