It is common practice and even in the plans of remote sites, oil rigs and commercial boats to use welding 02 for treating people.

I live in the oil patch very close to the Gulf of Mexico. I've seen the biggest UW contractors in the world show up with racks of Oxygen G cylinders. Not one was labelled "Medical." They were on the same 18 wheeler as the chamber. It was not for welding.

Thanks to all for the comments and advice. I read the pertinent section of the Oxygen Hackers guide and was pretty much convinced that the O2 was OK to breathe. Yesterday, I went up to my gas supplier and asked for his advice - once again, use it without a worry. Interestingly, he is no longer selling medical grade because of the FDA paperwork involved. His welding oxygen is the same medical grade I've been buying. Unfortunately, the tank belongs to ******, and once the O2 is gone, it can't be refilled. I think I'll paint it yellow and add it to my low-pressure bank.

Once again, thanks to everyone for the info.

Gary

My understanding, and this will vary with supplier,so ask. Welder's and medical are from the same source, the only difference is they will pull a vacuum on the medical cylinder to completely empty the tank, and then fill it with oxygen. Aviator's grade gets filtered for any remaining moisture since freezing at altitude is catastrophic. Oxyhacker book is good, but variability in the gas supplier business is bizarre;I always make it a point to ask the supplier about their procedures because it is amazing what you find. One supplier I know of treats all 3 grades the same (pull vacuum, and filter the gas),but charges 3 different prices, even though the welder's grade is the same as everything else.

my experience as well, some vendor I know and trust I have dove welders grade, others never in a million years. Aviators grade I avoid if possible (unless when I need it for flying)
