On Thursday night, a good friend and I took his zodiac to the America for a dive. By the time we got in the water, it was pitch black and we were the only ones on the site. It was a spectacular dive, being able to fully explore on our own time table with no one else there to interrupt or distract us.

In over 10 years of diving this site, I always knew that there is oil in the sand somewhere around this wreck but I've never seen it or known exactly where it is. When we got under the wreck in the dark and our HID lights illuminated the bottom, the oil stood out as if used motor oil had been poured on a grey concrete floor. With our lights it was actually shiny and had the rainbow effect that oil often has in water.

AREA TO AVOID:

For those familiar with the America, when you are underneath the wreck about half way along the centerline, there is a workbench on its side with a massive vise bolted onto it. On the channel side of this bench and 5 meters away, there is an old 55 gallon drum and a tire sticking out of the silt. The oil is located all around this drum for about a 3 meter radius.

There are several other drums located on this site and I'm not sure if this is the only area with oil, or if the oil did come from this drum so the entire site should be dove with caution.

Thanks for that, Kevin. I'd heard the same warnings but never have found the oil myself.
