Well, to all you Poseidon Odin lovers - I hate to break the news to you, but I had a freeflow on the weekend that left me a little dissapointed with the reg.
We dove the powercanal tailrace here on the weekend - water was 36 degs, very strong current. Air temp was about 20-25F, strong winds and heavysnowfall - couldn't think of a better day for a dive.
I did nothing to keep the reg warm before getting into the water, except all the hot air coming out of my mouth bragging to my buddy about the performance of the Odin - confident that there would be no problems. We did discuss what to do in case of a freeflow. Buddy breathe if possible, and try to save the dive, but if not, go to surface. Depth is 28' max, so all agreed.
When we finally got in the water, I truly questioned my sanity, and wondered if I would be able to complete the dive (dive is about 25 mins - I'm still in my Bare wetsuit). My face went numb in the first minute, and things were good after that. About 10mins into the dive, I notice slight amount of bubbles when I inhaled. No biggie - kept an eye on it and continued with the dive. 15 minutes the bubbles are getting bigger - than WHOOSH!!! full on freeflow! I fumbled for my octo - tried to breathe it, but couldn't get anything. Flipped the adjustment and still nothing. Now I started to get concerned. The current had my buddy about 15-20' from me now. He turned to see me give the "ascend"signal, I got some air from the freeflowing bubbles, and headed to surface.
Ended up bailing on the dive half-way thru. I would guess from the time the reg started FF, till the time I got it turned off was about a minute. I lost somewhere around 400psi in that time - the blowout was amazing. After a unplanned swim, we were able to climb over an ice shelf and caught a ride to our original exit.
I've already spoke to a few people about possible reasons for the FF. LY mentioned the factory set IP, plus it is not sealed.
Now, I'm not picking on the Odin here - because I think ANY reg COULD have froze in those conditions. But with Poseidon's claim to fame being "Worlds Premier coldwater reg" - I was a little dissapointed. And I had to eat my words after bragging to this guy.
If my cold goes away, planning on a repeat dive this weekend, but with some Scubapro regs of another buddy...... I'll keep ya posted.
