As a dermatologist, I would likely say, you will never be able to determine a cause for the rash, unless a pattern was noted.
Being that it was on the knee, I would suspect a mechanical abrasion denuding part of the skin. Also possible is stinging polyps or other sea creatures like corals.
The description you gave is pretty nonspecific. Almost every one on our dive group this week got a little rash like yours on the knees, shins, and arms. Slight abrasion from the rope, ladder, corals all can cause a reaction like you have.
I think too many people blame fire corals even though their skin rash is simply from a simple abrasion. The main concern is a secondary infection either from the ocean water, pond water, or from your dive buddies.
But since your father is a doctor, you probably wouldn´t have to worry about someone making the diagnosis of an infection for you.
