I think this is the right forum...if it's not, I'm sorry! I was diving at St. Thomas in the eastern carribean on a cruise recently. I noticed while in the water that one spot on my left leg, right under the knee, felt odd. The next day, I have a red splotchy rash which is raised a bit above the other skin. Thinking back, I do recall at one point hitting that area on a rope tied to a bouy onj the surface: I was turning to communicate something to my dive buddy right after passing the rope and I managed to hit my leg on it. So, I have two questions: the rash, I'm guessing it's caused by nematocysts that were on the rope? Larval forms of jellyfish maybe? (wild guess, but better than aliens) Secondly, I don't need to do anything, do I? The rash has shrunk a tad and become more defined (rather than general redness, it's very defined darker red/light purple splotches) and only itches sometimes. I think it'll clear up in a day or three. I was diving a shortie (upper half of my two piece) which left the legs uncovered.

The other odd thing is, I only recall hitting that one part of me on the rope, but I have two small splotches on my waist and one big splotch on the outside of my right leg, a little below the knee. ?

Again, if this is the wrong forum, sorry, I tried!

I was joking about how I pee underwater! I am not joking about this rash! However, in a day or two it'll probably be something to joke about. My mom was worried for a day though and my explanation, littered with terms such as "larval forms," "cnidaria," "nematocysts" and "sea lice" probably didn't help.

I wouldnt worry too much...yet....I knew you were joking about peeing.....As loong as its going away dont give it too much thought....but then again, Im not a doctor....did you call DAN?? They might have some input

No need to call DAN, my dad's a doc. However, he puts people to sleep for a living. What I'm most interested in is knowing what caused the rash, what could have been on that rope to cause it. The rope looked like a permanent fixture, so I'd guess things were floating by and got caught on it. I've read a little about the rash and figured it'll clear up. If it doesn't, my dad'll take care of it. (you know, once I dissected a frog. He brought home some chemicals from the hospital and we put the thing to sleep. I dissected a life toad! The heart was still beating the next morning when I tossed him out back. pretty nifty having a doc for a dad!)
