I had a really great dive in Botany Bay, near Sydney, this Saturday and made a completely fascinating observation which I would like to share: I observed an octopus using a discarded metal can lid as a shield. Tool use by animals was doubted until a few decades ago, and I think it's still special to see something like that in an invertebrate.

I also wrote a blog post with some philosophical musings about the meaning of invertebrates using metal technology.
