The common octopus (octopus vulgaris) has a life cycle which comes to an end after reproduction. They typically die very shortly after the last of its eggs have hatched. 24 months is pretty much the outer limits of their typical life span.
 
Strangely, we were diving Cozumel on May 1st in the morning and came across a BABY octopus! It was about an inch or two tall and was out during daylight hours. Wonder if it's a chip off the old block???
