My son was recently certified Junior Scuba Diver - he is doing his first boat dive in October. What can I tell him about the water temp? Anyone out lately at 80 ft off the Jersey shore? He is diving wet and is a bit nervous. All of our dives have been beach dives on Cape Ann, Shark River or at Dutch - I would like to tell him it is warmer than Dutch :D. We hit 49 degrees at 60 feet at Dutch - which has been colder than any of our beach dives.
Can anyone share temps off the Jersey Shore lately? Or have any October temps they can share from previous dives?
Thanks.

The surface water temps off the Jersey Shore can change quite a bit from day to day depending on the wind, current, etc. However the bottom temp is generally consistent within a few degrees during the season. The larger variances are due to seasonal change such as winter vs. summer. This summer and into September, I've had bottom temps varying from 52-58 degrees in the 80 foot range and would expect to be in that range for the Emerald in October.

Thank you - I will post the temps from the dive after the weekend. I ended up buying him a Henderson 7/5 hooded vest - I wanted him to be as comfortable as I could - hope it gives him the warmth he needs.

Warmer than Dutch, that's for sure. For example I dove with a deep diver course a couple weekends ago. 48 at 100 feet at Dutch, 52 at 125 on the Stolt wreck.

According to my Galileo Luna, temps were between 60-65 on the Stolt two weeks ago.

Ok for anyone that cared - we dove a small tug boat on the Axle Carson Reef - two tank dives both were so similar it is not worth noting the small difference in temperature - at 74 feet it was 64 degrees after 5 mins - 60 degrees after 10 mins and 59 degrees for the remainder of the dive.
It was pretty foggy in the morning - looked like it might burn off mid morning and then socked in again around lunch time. The ocean was very quiet - maybe 2 foot swells with very little current at depth. Enjoyable all around and my son liked his hooded vest - was warm. He did feel colder on his second dive but we still put in a 28 min dive on the second.

Warmer than Dutch Springs - :D
