I recently purchased an Oceanic Excursion BC with the optional gauge console retractor mount. Where on the BC is the mount for the retractor? it claims it is built in.

anyone running this BC and have the retractor mount? any pics ?

thanks,

There is a little gromet on the lower left front, the retractor goes inside the bcd and the cable thru the grommet. You need to take the connecter off to put the cable thru then back on.

I don't have one attached at the moment and I'm headed out the road soon. I'll see if I can find pictures or put on one and take pictures of the process.

Best,

Chris

I thought I'd re-use this thread rather than start another for the Islander.

I've got an Islander BC, same advertized feature "[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Integrated instrument
retractor mount (retractor not included)", and I ordered the Oceanic retractor.
I don't see any grommet, and it's hard for me to imagine where inside
the bcd the retractor might go.

The promised pictures for the Excursion weren't posted, so no help there.
The only mount I've come up with put the split ring on one of the web loops,
and I bought a 3rd-party male clip tied to my console.

It's pretty "dangly", the Oceanic logo is upside down, and it leaves me
feeling like I haven't got it right. I'm not upset about the upside down
logo (plausably that's intended, since it would be upright as viewed by
the wearer), it just that the whole thing doesn't feel "integrated" and I
don't like the "dangliness".

There were no instructions with the retractor, and the BC manual says
nothing about the retractor. (But then, it doesn't say anything about
the Islander, either :(). I've checked the Oceanic support site, there's
nothing additional there, and staring at the pictures I see the optional
knife mount, but no retractor.

Help?

Dunno if it's like my Oceanic Probe, but on the left side, under the oceanic logo/small pocket, you look under that flap, and there's a male Fastex like buckle. It's actually a Duraflex buckle, but anyway...that's where the retractor attaches for mine at least.

Thanks for taking the time to try to help.

There are small zipper pockets on the Islander. I've looked it over both visually and by feel pretty thoroughly, and I can't find any plastic buckles, D-rings, or anything else that seems like it would be an attach point for a retractor either in, on, or near the pocket.

But you have definitely expanded my view of this, since if it were there, it would be about 18 inches lower than where I would expect an instrument retractor to mount, which is up by the sternum. On the hip is clearly another option, after all, that's more or less where the Men In Black put the SPG, although NOT on a retractor;).
If the retractor fails mounted up by my sternum I think I notice it quickly, If it's already hanging below my BC, I can see there might be some dredging involved. But that doesn't mean it's not what Oceanic intended.

I stared at the probe picture on the website; in the frontal view there's a ring hanging below the BC on the left side, could be the retractor? Then if I look at the Islander picture (front view)
http://oceanicworldwide.com/img/p_bcs_islander_black1.jpg
then OMG there's a ring that could be a retractor about where what I'd taken as the pocket drain hole is located.

I'm not convinced, because:
- There's a matching "drain hole" in the right pocket.
- There is no attachment H/W inside the pocket. You could just let the retractor
body sit loose in the pocket, I guess, but you say the Probe has a male buckle
connector that attaches to the retractor.
- I'm still not over it not being where I (and the salesman at my LDS, an authorized
Oceanic dealer) expected the retractor to mount. Doesn't mean much.

If that's what was intended, fine, I can try it and either use it, or do something else. But I'd like to understand what Oceanic intended.

I see some forum activity from Doug Krause today, maybe he'll get to this.

I don't have the most recent Probe LX version, mine's one version before it. There's two zippered pockets on the left and right side. The smaller of the pockets is basically on the outside of the bigger pocket, and is attached to the bc on top by the zipper, and at each end...the underside is unattached, and you can look up under that...and there's the buckle under there.

Now, the new versions of the BCDs may not have that buckle anymore, and just expect you to put the retractor in the pocket and out through a gromet. I can't find any good shots of the left side of any of the BCs to look more closely.

You could always call them directly, or send an email to their support email address. I go t a fairly quick reply from them the one time I emailed them.

Now, this picture appears to show the retractor on the left side. Exactly how that mounts, I dunno

Old thread but I thought I would post the answer to this question. I does indeed mount on the left side. There are three grommets (holes) on the waist and under those you will find a zipper. What you do is unscrew the end of the retractor, the one with the ring on it. Put the retractor inside the zipper opening and thread the wire through the grommet and reattach the end of the retractor. Zip up and you're ready to go. You can attach your gauge there so it doesn't dangle and you can also have easy access to read it. That's what I used it for anyway.
