Get familiar with game laws, in Texas the laws are different between state waters and federal waters. In some cases you can catch a legal fish on hook and line that wouldn't be legal if taken by spear.

I'd do some free diving with a pole spear first, to get the feel of sneaking up on the fish. I'd do that at the same time I was practicing my scuba, until scuba becomes comfortable to the point of being second nature. Then I'd start taking the pole spear down with tanks. At that point, you will really appreciate the ability to slowly sneak up on the fish & just hang there for a minute or two, without gasping for breath, anytime you want to. Next, you can move up to a spear gun, when the range limitation of the pole spear starts to get frustrating.

After you get the gun, save the pole spear to train a future dive buddy.
