OK- I admit we cruise 1X/year to Cozumel (makes me a cruise ship weenie!!??)and we also take 1 land vacation to Coz. I just read (http://www.cometocozumel.com/english/wilma.asp) where Coz will be ready for cruise ships Nov 14th which is excellant since we will be cruising there on Nov 18th!! I plan on spending lots of $$$. Prima's (yum), diving, taxi's etc. May even buy some goodies from the shops (usually don't shop). Plan on renting a jeep and going to Coconuts too- does anyone know if it's still there? I know they just reopened from Emily and we were planning on bringing a T-shirt.
So I know most divers aren't crazy about cruise ships but they are important for Coz's economy!

Jean in MO- Go MIZZOU!!

I would only say that it's obvious that you are an optimist.

we going jan 18 to playa del carmen and to coz for a week. we going ot spen more money in town to get the sprit back up in mexico. and im going to bring old cloaths that dont fit anymore to bring to the mexica red cross to help.

I doubt Coconuts is there or in operable shape. The east side road wasn't even done with repairs from Emily when Wilma hit. Emily flattened a few places on the east side, and she was a cakewalk compared to Wilma. So, my best guess is, don't even plan on being able to drive to the wild side for a couple months at least.

Got this off of travelnotes:

one more thing this is from the owners of Coconuts and Mezcalitos . . .Mezcalitos is open and selling beer to Tourist only. . . they survived as well as Coconuts (Chucho"SP") said this morning they will be up and running Monday when the beer arrives they made it thru as well . NO reports further south as the road is still impassable. .

Just thought I'd pass that along... do I believe it? Hmmm.... Sure, why not! :14:

WOW! That's hard to believe considering the wallop they got from Emily! I'm happy to hear it though! Gotta have those Mescalito's Super Shrimp!!!:07:

The difference is that the northern eyewall of Wilma totally missed the island, so the east side never got onshore winds and seas. Emily passed to the south, so the east shore got pounded during that storm. I'll bet that the damage over there was minimal this time.

The right turn that Wilma made when the eye was over Cozumel is what did the west side in; that and the slow speed it was moving. It slowly dragged the southern eyewall (west wind) up the whole length of the island.

Thanks for the update- it is hard to believe there would be anything left on the east side but hopefully they will be open when we are there.

PS Moodie Jeff- My son and I met you at Caribe Blu in May of 2004- you and your wife were studying for the Nitrox test up in the resturant. I recognized your pic.

I remember you... You are friends with Jeannie, correct? Gordon (ggunn) was there at the same time. I was going to tell everybody that we need to play nice since we all know each other ;)

Mia is actually my girlfriend... we'll work on the wife part soon enough. :Kissy:

Yes- we are friends of Jeanie and Mike. I think they are working harder in their "retirement" years than all the time they were here in Missouri! Hope to see them soon.

Wedding in Coz???? ;)
