Keep reading and informing yourself above and beyond your course. Here on ScubaBoard you can get an education in the ins and outs of gear that goes beyond any open water course. That alone can get you off to a better start as an informed consumer. Combined with all of the other forums you can really begin to "think like a diver" before making those first dives.
