We are off to Bonaire in a couple of weeks (Buddy Dive) and very much looking forward to it, but I have been a little put off by the reports here that it is all very similar.

There are a LOT of shore diving sites and picking the best is not obvious (if there is a 'best').

Does anyone have a 'not to be missed' list for Bonaire?

Any recommendations?

Are there any dives really worth getting on a boat for?

Thanks for any suggestions

..so is Alice in Wonderland.

IMHO, they all do look the same after a while though.

My favorite sites accessible from shore:

- Hilma Hooker
- Angel City
- LaDania's Leap (not sure, this may be a boat only)
- Salt Pier

Boat dives (yes, there are some worth getting on a boat for!):

- Rappel

- Anything around Klein Bonaire (Forest and Nearest Point were good). You'll only need to head to Klein once for a couple of dives while in Bonaire.

- Small Wall (that's where the BonaireCam is. It can be done from shore but only if you, or someone in your group, knows the owner and he lets you use his beach ;) You do it from boat otherwise)

- Margareth Bay (drift dive)

Of all the dives that I made while there, the above were my favorites. They tended to offer something unique and unusual compared to majority of dive sites. There're plenty of others spots that I'm sure are fascinating dives, we just didn't get around to diving them. I hear the town pier makes for an incredible night dive, unfortunately we didn't get a chance to dive it.

I get excited thinking about Alice....................in Wonderland.

Karpata is very good, as well as Angel City.

O-Ring is right in they do get to look the same after awhile, but the topology does change and occasionally you'll come across some critters you wont see again on that trip.

I know some people who are very content doing all their diving in front of their resort.

I have to agree with Jep as Karparta is my favorite. But off a site locally called Front Porch? There were 2 sunken tugs and also quite a nice garden of eels. Lotsa fishing line off the tug care is needed. Both at depth 85-95. Have a great time.

Who the $&@! told you that the diving was all the same in Bonaire?!
That's the thing I loved most about Bonaire, the variety! I am so confused.
The Salt Pier is a great dive. The pier itself, plus the shallows around it. There were a ton, a TON of nudibranchts and urchins and other small, extremely cool stuff. The town pier is absolutely a must of you are a photographer, and really, even if you are not. It's creepy and cool, and you get to see great stuff. I think you have to pay a few extra florins, but it's worth it.
Actually, the dock right behind Buddy Dive is a great night dive--in fact, there IS no bad night dive, do a night dive early and do it often.
And do The Hilma Hooker, like they said. (I shudder when I think of that dive, though, cause as I was entering the water, a rogue wave bashed into me and sat me right down on a giant head of fire coral, just like a chair. Ow. Ow. Ow. Ow. I was wearing a lycra skin, or it might have been much worse).
The best thing was to take the time to drive up to the north end of the island. The dive sites are often rugged and often really hard to get to, but TRUST ME, they are worth it. I wish I could remember the name of the beach we found at the north end, you park on a cliff and walk down to a beach with a beautiful grotto, and we had the place all to ourselves. It was the most beautiful beach I had, and still have, ever laid eyes on. We did 1000 steps, that was a nice dive, too. Sucked walking up alll those stairs with gear, but if I can do it, you can, too! :)
I wish we had discovered the north end before our last dive day, but what a way to end a week.
Can you tell I really loved Bonaire? I'm jealous!

Who the $&@! told you that the diving was all the same in Bonaire?!
Nobody had to tell me, I spent 15 days there in January. It got old by then. To each his/her own, I guess.

I second the recommendation for 1000 steps though...salt pier is a cool night dive too. IMHO, the ones in the middle kinda suck and the best sites are to the North or to the South. The south end is sweet because of the double reef formations...

Check out Oil Slick Leap. They have put in a new (very nice) ladder. Nothing like a 6-8 ft high giant stride. We saw garden eels at the stern of the Hooker several weeks ago and at Alice In Wonderland.

Ole Blue, Karpata and Angel City. Have a great trip.

Here is a link to a trip report I did on Bonaire. It talks more to the resort but there are some pictures and some of our "Favorite" spots. The report is on Digital Diver if the link gives you trouble....

Hope you enjoy.... ;)

Oh yeah .... All those sites mentioned above are nice
