Is there a place in Marblehead/Swampscott area where I could rent a boat? Would the said place have a cow if I told them I intended to dive off it? (Off the boat, not off the cow.)

I think it's an interesting concept. The website is certainly vague with no reference to membership costs or if there are training requirements (and costs associated with that), etc. The risk would be incredible....I can't believe they would send someone out into Salem Harbor without some sort of training. It would be a liability nightmare. I suspect there are membership costs, as well as some sort of internally controlled licensing costs.

I called them. The cost is $4000 per year for a lifetime membership. It is higher (they did not say how much higher) if you only sign up for 5 years or for 3 years. That $4000/year price also holds only if you sign up in winter. If you join in summer, it is higher.

OTOH, you have unlimited use of any boat out of any FreeBoatClub location. They claim no hidden fees at all. On the third hand, they implied that more popular boats are not always available.

In any case, that's not what I am looking for. I am looking for a place where I could rent a boat on irregular basis with no continuing obligations.

Just an idea.

Go to the boat rental early morning at Westhill Pond in CT and rent a boat then motor it across the lake to the boat launch and trailer it.

Bring it back later in the evening. They'll never know it went out of the lake.
