Im from Green Bay Wisconsin but Im planning on moving to N.C does anyone no if there is good shore dives that I could do instead of the 80.00 charter fees Im use to 2 dives a week and couldnt afford the charter costs

Hi Scubadoo,

Sorry, but there is not much in the way of shore diving in NC, we have some of the best wreck diving anywhere but most of it is 1 to 2 hours off shore and in 100ft+. There are a couple of divable locations off the surf but vis is usally poor at best not to mention the fact that the surf gets pretty rough at times. There are a few quarries that you can dive but not much to look at there either. What part of NC are you moving to ??

Herman....Raleigh,NC

Boy thats a real bummer. im gonna be in the rocky mount area. Are the charter rates that steep everywhere?

well i dis agree there are plenty of spots to do shore dives you justgot to get with right person al though the boat dives do make it easier ect

Ok, I will bite, except for Radio Island, where? Now, granted you can shore dive anywhere but not much point in looking at 1 ft of sand. If there is not at least 10 ft of vis and something other than sand, I see no point in the dive. If you do know some spots, I am interested, lets go.

I know absolutely nothing about shore diving in NC, so no comment there. I just wanted to say hi to a fellow cheesehead! I am originally from Wisconsin myself.

Temps in the 70's-80's vis in the 60-100 range...absolutely fantastic diving. We drive 7 hours to dive there even with VA beach 3 hours away.

Herman - we did 2 on the City of Houston last weekend and one on Frying Pan Light Tower.

City of Houston and Frying Pan are great dives aren't they. Scubadoo, there are some ok shore dives with good vis, but you have to do them in winter. That's when the inshore algae and stuff dies off. As far as shore dives go, you are limited to piers and jettis. Lot's of people like them, but the surge is bad and the vis is limited to about 40ft. I say, save up about $100 and do two offshore dives. If you get into the gulfstream, you have 85 degree water and almost 100ft vis all summer long.

Besides, you live near me. so, there is a great quarry in Thomasville--Blue Stone. It's cold and rather murky, but not at all bad. There is some pretty cool stuff in there.
