I have been certified for many years but my new husband doesn't dive. In fact, he only just recently snorkeled for the second time. I am trying to work him up to trying a Discover Scuba course while we are on Roatan, but of course he's got to be comfortable. Are there any particular shops that you would recommend that will allow him to snorkel from the boat while I dive? I understand this may limit me to more shallow sites, which is okay. I don't dive very often, so I am easily impressed! Also, if he does decide he wants to do the Discover session, what shops are best for being patient, slow and safe with newbies and teaching in small groups? He had tubes in his ears as a kid, so I would not be surprised if he has some trouble clearing. We are staying 3 nights at Land's End (doing non-diving mainland stuff the rest of the trip) so we 'd like to go with a shop that is walking distance from there if possible.

Thanks!
Heather

Why wait until Roatan to do a Discover SCUBA? Try it in Atlanta. If he likes it, get the course work done there and then do checkouts in Roatan. Maybe you can then be his buddy on his first OW dives in Roatan!

Just food for thought.

Atlantic Sea Divers has their shop at the Half Moon Resort, which is about a two minute walk from Lands End. I did 16 dives with them in February. Eduardo (spelling??) would not have any problems taking along a spouse to go snorkelling. Joe, one of the divemasters, tried his best to convince my wife to do a Discover Scuba, but he didn't quite succeed. Had her thinking about it though.
We're going back to West End next year, and we'll be diving with Atlantic Sea Divers without a doubt.

Seriously look into CoCo View. There is a wealth of snorkeling possibilities, in addition to all the diving. It would be a great place to learn, also. I don't know their policies regarding snorkelers on the dive boats. I am sure that someone on ScubaBoard will know that answer, however.

The snorkeling at COCO View is excellent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CoCoView is a 30min cab ride from Land's End.

Coconut Tree Divers in the West End lets snorkelers go on both of their afternoon dive trips for $5 pp. Under a 10 min. walk to the West End. http://www.coconuttreedivers.com/diving/schedule.php Both they and Native Sons also do Discover Dives. As do probably most of the other diveops in the West End - they're just the closest - except for Atlantic which as mentioned above is 2mins. away.

More like 40.

Too bad, though, CCV sounds like it would be the perfect place.

17 miles - seemed like less than 40 mins. Back through French Harbor, bypass Coxen Hole to the North and west past AKR to the West End. We stayed at Sea Lodge which is 2mins. from Lands End.

I'll change it to 30...:D
