I realize that one of the three nomad series set ups is for only sidemount, what I was wondering is this...the Nomad XT which I have read can be used for back as well as sidemount diving do you have to get the transpac harness with it or can you get the basic harness for it.

Hope this makes sense

Thanks

If you want the basic harness, then just buy a sidemount wing seperately. this will be minus the buttplate though, so you'll need a way to mount your butt rails, which probably means backplate, and you don't need the extra weight of a buttplate unless maybe you're diving aluminums....

Sounds like you are making it harder than it needs to be. Is there a specific reason you don't want the transpac vs a basic harness?

Tired it on at the shop and did not like it but again I have not dove it and am just looking at differnt things and weighing all the options.

thanks for the response

I dive a transpac with a single tank for OW, and a Nomad EXP for cavern diving. The thing I really like about the transpac, is that it's 100% customizable. I've gone through several "generations" of gear set up with my transpac as my diving style has changed, which is certainly better than buying a new BC every year. If I was going to buy a new sidemount system, I'd probably go with the JT.

That said, if it doesn't work for you, then it's useless. Have you tried out the Hollis SMS? I know several people (even transpac divers) who preferred the Hollis over the Dive Rite, and Hollis gear is generally made a little better, and holds up a little better to abuse.

In either case, you'll be spending a pretty long time customizing everything so that it works the way you want it. If I had it to do all over again, I might just fork over the $200-$300 for a sidemount course.

Thanks, I am going to take a sidemount course sometime in the near future I hope. I have looked at the sms and that is another option I am considering. I guess the big thing for me is I have the gear I bought for single tank open water and am happy with it but I also see many people selling gear for one reason or another and hope to avoid that but till I try it I suppose I will never know how it feels, big difference on the show room floor and in the water.

Thanks for your input
