My other half wants NOAA software for xmas. I'm not really sure what it is..but he said you can plan dives on it. And...you can get it online. Anyone know where?

thanks!

Email Bob3, divers3@pacbell.net. I think he regularly has both the book and the CD software. If he has it, he'll be glad to help you.

The NOAA manual on CD is probably what he's talking about.
NOAA did such a good job on their anti-piracy provisions on the CD that I haven't been able to even get it to RUN on any of a half-dozen computers I've tried it on. Their support e-mail is non-functioning, too, so now its a matter of tracking down someone in the agency for support. That'll be a job for my "spare time".
I'd recommend holding off on the CD version 'till they get the bugs worked out.

thanks for the info... I had been considering the CD version (I have way too many books), please let me know when it is more.... now how should I phase this???? more stable?

It's about the size of a Sears & Roebuck catalog, and jam packed with lotsa useable goodies.
If a diver is going to buy only ONE book related to diving, this should be the one.
Beats the pants off the USN Diving Manual, as a much greater amount of material is directly applicable to sport diving.
Wish I could get the darn CD to work though.

Thanks guys! Maybe I'll just get the book for him. Although he REALLLLLLY wants the software. He heard about it from his friends...now whether they actually have the software and use it, or whether they just heard about it..I don't know.

Where do I get the book?

With a little assistance from the folks at the NTIS I opened up the NOAA manual CD that's been languishing on the corner of my desk for the past 2 months. Here's what the folks at the NTIS (National Technical Information Service) had to say:

Hello Mr. Thiry,
I apologize for the mix up on the e:mail address. The address was changed after the processing of the CDROM's. You can e:mail me, or our other e:mail address was changed to cpds@ntis.gov As for you NOAA DIVE CDROM, there is only one way that I may be able to help you. You have to use the adobe reader that is on the CDROM. Because of the encryption on the CDROM, some people are having problems using this CD. Some people are never able to open it. If this turns out to be the case, we can talk to you about refunding your money. If you would like to try to open it the back way, I will try to explain it.

Put your CD in the drive. Once it come up to initialize the cd, cancel the process.
Go to your Windows Explorer and click on your CD drive.
You will see on the right side of your screen the files on the CD.
Double click on the folder that says READER.
Double click on the file that says reader.exe
(This will open up the ADOBE on the CDROM)
Once ADOBE is open, go to FILE on the top menu bar
Open the CDROM from the CD drive
Once you see the files on the CDROM, click on the mainmenu.pdf
This should open up your CDROM, and you should see the main splash screen for the NOAA DIVE MANUAL.

I hope this will work for you. If my explanation doesn't make sense, I would be glad to talk to you on the phone and walk you through this process. You can e:mail me at jramsey@ntis.gov, with your phone number.
