In a nutshell air contains 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. Nitrox is air with extra oxygen added that may contain anywhere from 22% - 99% oxygen. It is also called enriched air, NTX, EANX, safeair and a host of other names.

From my PADI text, Nitrox is any formulation of Nitrogen and Oxygen, Enriched air (EANx) is when the mix has greater ratio of Oxygen than 21:79.

OK so what do you call 50%?
I am not being obtuse, I am ANDI trained and we have slightly different naming standards than other agencies.

Nitrox is anything from 21% to 99% oxygen. And, possibly you could define air-oxygen mixes below 21% as nitrox too. EAN (greater than 21%) requires special training, and above 40% ("hot mixes") requires special cleaning of dedicated regs and tanks.

Nitrox is a breathing mixture that conatins more oxygen then found in the air you breathe.
example:
Air is commonly 21% oxygen and 79 % nitrogen the remaining 1 % are trace gases.
(This varies )

Nitrox may be in any concentration above 21% oxygen.
Some shops have begun calling air, normoxic nitrox. due to the "normal" % of oxygen.
Oxygen is oxygen, its a "pure" gas.
Nitrox is a mixture.

Buy a book or take a class.

Deco gas.

It's still nitrox, but not a recreational mix, and even by tech divers, most likely not used as a bottom mix or travel mix.
I thought the current correct name for anything other than 50/50 and O2 was 'stroke mix' ;)
