My nitrox certification course included a mandatory "checkout dive". I had to make two dives with an instructor in order to become nitrox certified. Is this normal? Do nitrox courses typically include a requirement for an actual checkout dive (or two??). Just curious.

From what I've been told when questioning instructors about nitrox, they say it's all book work and a mock nitrox dive, or an actual dive on nitrox and you show them the results.

Some agencies used to require it. Now some do and some don't.

Even without the actual dive, the class should have you select a mix, plan the dive and analyze the tanks to make sure that what you asked for is what you got.

If the class comes with two actual dives, that's great! A couple of extra dives is nothing to complain about.

PADI no longer requires the check out dive(s) for Nitrox certification.

This is universal whether you are in Texas or even Bonaire.

ohh...i agree with web monkey about the frills of two extra dives, unless you have to pay the added expense.

I enjoyed the dive, but I didn't see where it was necessary. The instructor observed me analyzing the tanks, but that could have been done in the shop. The cost of the course did not include the dives, they were extra. The coursework was ANDI and it was an SSI shop.

Well my Nitrox cert didn't require any dives. It was through ACUC, I can't see the dives really actually meaning anything in the grand scheme of things, but like others have said, at least you got a couple of dives.

I found the dive very educational. I didnt realize with "air" you breathed ....in...then out....in....then out.

But with nitrox.....you breathed....out....then in...out ....then in.

NOT~!

Quite observant. I'm going to have to test that hypothesis on my next Nitrox dive. :D

You'd be amazed at the things I can learn on nitrox check out dives. This person doesn't know to equalize their mask, that one doesn't know how to kick, the other one swims with their hands......... Sorry, but I'll never certify anyone in any diving course without diving with them. There are too many things that need fixing before I'll sign off on them. What is Zenith's slogan?
