more Oxygen means less nitrogen which means more time at the same depth. This has to be weighed against too much Oxygen which is a BIG problem if it gets out of control.

yes, what mark said.

to summarize, Nitrox benefits are:

1. more bottom time, particularly in the 50-100 feet range
2. less fatigue (anecdotal only thus far)

Nitrox drawbacks are:

1. oxygen toxicity dangers. if you breathe "too much" oxygen for
a particular depth, you will convulse and die. most of your nitrox
class will center on understanding and managing O2 tox dangers.
this is easily manageable.

The "more bottom time" part of the equation also has limits that you need to be aware of.

Too many "certified" nitrox divers don't seem to have ever heard about that part, and that worries me sometimes.

Benefit:

3. Safer than air (if you dive nitrox using air tables/computer and stay well clear of the MOD).

yes. i hear that a lot of older divers dive Nitrox this way (i.e. they treat it as air)

I saw a nitrox sticker at DEMA that said "GEEZER GAS"

:eyebrow:

Just make sure that if you are breathing Nitrox as air, that you still track your Oxygen toxicity.

I am new to the whole Nitrox world, I understand that it is enriched oxygen and costs more but what are my benefits??

Several people have answered this well, but I would suggest you review your decompression theory, in addition to asking this question.

Some people will call me a cruel tyrant for making this suggestion, but I'd rather have you understand the concepts behind the answer. Once you understand decompression concepts, the benefits of nitrox are a natural conclusion.

Important benefits already outlined. Top five additional perks are . . .

5. A new set of dive tables and equations
4. Yet another c-card, but one you'll actually use
3. Distinctively-colored dive flag sticker for your rear window
2. Other divers not tempted to grab your tank by "mistake."
1. Way cool tank stickers make it look like rocket science.
