I did my first nitrox dive last weekend. I never gave it much thought but after the dive my dive buddie told me that he was not very happy with me. He said that he didnt think id should be diving nitrox if he wasnt. He said it wouldnt safe for him to use my octo if he every had a problem. I told him that if he every had a problem with his air supply and needed to use my octo that it wouldnt be a problem. Has any one else had the same problem?

If your Buddy understood Nitrox he'd be diving it too educate him about Nitrox and you should be fine most people are afraid of things they don't understand

That's what i did i gave him my tdi nitrox book and told him to read it. He was going to dive with me this weekend. When he heard that the other guys going where allso diving nitrox he called me and said he wasnt going. This guy was one of my first dive buddies. I feel real bad. I hope he comes around.

First, thank your buddy for thinking about the dive. It would have been better to discuss it before the dive but at least you discussed a potential issue after the dive. Just how many people really take the time to thing about this stuff (excluding tec divers of course).

I think after just a bit of education, this will result in the nice non-issue that it really is. Maybe your buddy will want to start diving nitrox as well.

Get your buddy to look at some of the info available either on this forum or in other places. Don't lose a buddy over a "non issue". Heck PM me and I'll call him. Tell him that there sin't a thing that he needs to worry about, except the fact that your going to get more bottom time available than he is. Heck tell him you should be mad at him for NOT diving Nitrox ( joke flag)-Dive Safe-Dive Alot-M

Hey gunnelfish tell your buddy that he is all ready using nitrox EAN21 with a 218' mod. Tell him to talk to your dive shop they will set him straight. The only way your buddy would have a problem would be if you where bellow your mod. and if that was the case youd have trouble too. Dont feel bad i know a guy that feels the same way as your buddy.

Well I am teaching a Nitrox class tomorrow afternoon and I'll teach him the class for free if he can get up to Canada by noon.:book3:

Seriously though tell him to read up as he is obviously misinformed. If he still doesn't get it, escort him into a dive shop and have him talk to an instructor who will be more than happy to help him see the light. (we hate hearing stories like this)

When I started diving nitrox 10 years ago ignorance regarding EAN was the order of the day, it's hard to believe this type of misunderstanding still exists.

Your friend can feel "safe".
Actually your friend is "SAFER" breathing your octo.

Just keep in mind that YOU have to call the depth, and HE will have to call time.
and you both dive your OWN gas tables, ie you dive your nitrox tables, and he dives his air tables.
different gas = different tables... ALWAYS
aslong as he is calling time and you are calling depth then there is no additional risk as far as i can se.

There are two scenarios here (actually 6 but lets not dig in)

scenario 1
he needs your octo.
you two have been diving and hes first stage explodes into a bubble storm.
he takes your octo.
pros = ofgassing quicker when you are on your way up and less ongassing. (in practice this is accelerated deco but within NDL)
cons = None

scenario 2
you need his octo your first stage explodes into a bubble storm
Pros = you have ongassed less nitrogen than him prior to

cones = you now ongass faster and you offgas slower, but you are now at his "slower" pace wich means that you are in no harm anyhow.

simplified
so conclusive
aslong as you plan and execute the dive with your MAX depth and his MAX time you will always be better off than both of you on air.
