Hey,

I am heading to australia next year for a student exchange and I am really interested in doing the whale shark swim and diving at ningaloo reef.

Has anyone been? What about accommodation there?

Thanks

Where are you going for your student exchange? Ningaloo Reef is long way from anywhere (but worth the trip). I recommend Exmouth Dive Centre for all your diving needs and they can organise your accommodation as well:

Exmouth Diving Centre

This page of my web site has a few links for more information regarding accommodation, weather etc:

And just to give you and idea of what you can see check out this:

Alcina should be along shortly to tell you more.

Awesome thanks!

I'm in Melbourne and yes I know it's quite the journey to get there but I was thinking of somewhere to go after exams are done.

Whats the best way to get there?

You should wait until Alcina shows up, she has a LOT of inside knowledge about Ningaloo

The best way would be to fly, otherwise it is a very long drive .. about 4851 km and 50 hours driving.

Australia is nearly the size of Canada, so you can get an idea of distances, but the roads probably arent as good as Canada (my wife is a Canadian)

If you want to do the whale shark thing the when is just important as the how. Whale shark season is from late March to July.

What ever mode of transport you use you'll have to come via Perth. Flights between Melbourne and Perth can be purchased at reasonably low prices because there is more than one airline servicing the route and they are competing for your business. Flying from Perth to Learmonth (the airport 35km south of Exmouth) is much more expensive. There is only one airline servicing the route and they pretty much charge what they can get away with. That airline is Skywest:

Skywest Airlines - Home

To get here relatively cheaply you could fly to Perth then either drive or take a bus to get to Exmouth. The drive from Perth to Exmouth is 1,300 km and you can do it about 13 hours if you don't stop to look at the scenery.

What would be the recommended time to book in advance?
Thanks for all your help!
