I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me the differences; big or small, between the 60mm f/2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor and the 60mm f/2.8 AF Micro-Nikkor. In other words; the "D" versus the non "D" lens. I have an opportunity to pick up a non-"D" lens for a good price. Wise move or not? (I have a D-200)

Thanks in advance,

Hi,
Rather than plagerize Nikon, I will give the URL for the website that explains all the Nikkor nomenclature:

http://www.nikonlinks.com/unklbil/nomenclature.htm

Scroll down until you come to the "D" section. You can read the whole write-up and understand all the letters.

Oh, heck, here is what they say:

"Technology continued to improve as more functions were added to camera bodies. One improvement was the ability to meter in "3-D" mode, an improvement which allows the body (through a chip in the lens) to better assess distance from the focal plane to the object being photographed. AF"D" lenses are marked on the lens barrel. These lenses also have the slotted drive screw and 5 electrical contacts in the base plate."

I don't think there really is much advantage in the D over the non-D version. The D has something to do with the lens communicating the focusing distance, and almost all circumstances it will probably not make any difference.

I just bought one myself. I was told by the experts....who really are the experts in U\W, (Reef Photo), not to buy one that was not a "D". He might have told me why, but I have learned........just take his word for it. So I bought a new one as the used "D" models were doing very little more than a new US version with a warranty. I would not buy one as Ryan wanted me to be sure to get a "D". YMMV

Thanks for the link. That's the answer I was looking for!

I also appreciate the response from Joewr and BrantD too!
