I was doing a night dive last Sat. in Monterey. I've done about 6 night dives and numerous dives in the day in this same particular spot and each time I've always seen the usual suspects: small fish, crab, snails and sometimes an octopus or two. I've NEVER seen anything large out there besides the sea lions.
When we got there we noticed that the surf was a little rough (something unexpected here at this novice spot) so this was going to be a first for hubby and me also, as newbie divers. We geared up and managed to get out in the water without falling on our butts.
After a so-so dive where we saw nothing but a couple small fish and a tiny 8 in. wide ray. We start navigating toward shore, as we got shallower the vis suddenly turned to crap. I couldn't see but a foot or two in front of my light because of the sand being stirred up by the surf and surge. I felt like I was inside a washing machine.
Then my light comes accross this tail. This monstrous long tail!! I'm following it with my light trying to see where it ends and what it ends on!! The surge pulls me forward, almost on top of it, when I see this ray of some sort (later found out a bat ray) rising up off the bottom. I am literally snatching at my hubby's vest...arm...whatever I can get ahold of to keep from being sucked over top of it and landing on it before it can get out of the way. It looked to be about 3 1/2' wide at least. WHEW!
Get this...Hubby, who is right beside me, DID NOT SEE IT. He only saw the tail, was trying to figure out what that was, then was wondering why I was climbing all over him. Sigh...:blinking:
